Concert Review

Savoy Brown at Famous Dave's

of Savoy Brown

Joey Molland & Shakespeare's Pipe Open

Generations are bridged through good music. This was proven at a recent Savoy Brown concert at Famous Dave's in Calhoun Square on April 18, 2009. The restaurant/venue was packed with all ages of fans. We shared floor space with a young man who had more experience seeing Savoy Brown than us, although he is 30 years younger. Kim Simmonds on lead guitar and vocals, along with Gerry Sorrentino on Bass and Mario Staiano on Drums, put on a high energy, rockin' and soulful show at Famous Dave's. It was worth the SRO to be among the masses of fans of all ages. Opening for Savoy Brown was Joey Molland, formerly of Badfinger, with the band Shakespeare's Pipe, initially formed with his brother Doug Molland in 2001. Savoy Brown continued the momentum with a power packed show, endorsing the message on Kim Simmond's website "43 years and still rollin!" — Review & picture by Nancy Miller and Dave Speers

Ed. Note — There was a time when this band was called "Savoy Brown Blues Band". For info on this British import see: The History of Savoy Brown

Janiva Magness at Cedar May 22

Janiva Magness/Cool Disposition Poster

Cool Disposition Opening Act

"A superb, powerhouse R&B singer who delivers blues and soul with show-stopping authority" -Los Angeles Daily News
"Janiva Magness slow-burns and romps heart-first...she never injects contrived emotion, never puts a tear in her voice where one doesn't belong. She simply sings heartbreak, hunger and humor-sings 'em with equally great chops and feeling-and lets that speak for itself." -No Depression

Award-winning blues vocalist, Janiva Magness will be performing at the Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, May 22nd. Local blues band, Cool Disposition will open for Janiva. Doors open at 7 pm. Music begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 day of show and are available online through TicketWeb or at The Electric Fetus, Depth Of Field, Homestead Pickin' Parlor, and Irish On Grand. —from Harold Tremblay
