Big Walter Smith at Dean's

Big Walter Smith
Big Walter Smith

March 14 on St Paul's North End

Big Walter Smith & the Groove Merchants will be performing at Dean's Tavern on Saturday, March 14 from 9 pm. to 1 am. Dean's Tavern has been a fixture on North Rice St in St Paul for many years and has featured blues music on an on-again-off-again basis. There's no music calendar on Dean's web site but hopefully this trend will continue and we'll see more local blues acts at Dean's. Dean's is on our Blues Venue Map.

Big Walter Smith has been in the music business for over 55 years and has spent the last 39 years in the Twin Cities. His CD Brother To The Blues released in 1994 received a Grammy nomination and Big Walter has tallied some many accolades for his achievements over the years that it almost requires a whole page just to list them. There aren't many big "horn bands" left in this crumbling economy but the Groove Merchants are still doing it and they are unquestionably one of the best.

Hoopsnakes & Lamont Cranston Share Bill

The Hoopsnakes
The Hoopsnakes

March 14 — Medina Entertainment Center

The Lamont Cranston/Hoopsnakes connections can be traced back decades to the first time Bruce McCabe sat down at the keyboard with Pat Hayes, Bob Bingham and the rest of the band. In this unique reunion of sorts, Pat Hayes' current incarnation of the Lamont Cranston Band will open for Bruce McCabe's Hoopsnakes in what promises to be some sort of shakedown, "Upper Mississippi" or otherwise. Don't be surprised if there is a little bit of mix-and-match on stage at this show. For ticket info see: medinaentertainment.com. Medina Entertainment Center is on our Blues Venue Map. — Jake Jacobson

Hambone Blues Jam Benefit at Macho Nacho

Hambone Logo

Paul Mayasich & Lisa Wenger Group on Sat., March 14

The Austin, MN based Hambone Blues Jam has taken their show on the road to Rochester this winter to raise seed money for their summer Blues festival. Last year the festival suffered some bad luck with the weather and it hurt their attendance. A suggested donation of $10 dollars will be collected at the door with all proceeds going to the Hambone Blues Jam music festival to cover entertainment and operating costs. 2007 International Blues Challenge finalists, Levee Town, from Kansas City are the featured act. Joining Levee Town will be the Paul Mayasich, Lisa Wenger & Billy Larson Group, Black Cat Bone, T. Albert Lloyd Band and Brother Music Sister Rhythm. A similar event is being held on Friday, March 13th at the Holiday Inn in Austin, MN. Macho Nacho Blues Bar is located at the LaQuinta Inn in Rochester. Music begins at 5:30 pm. See the Blues Venue Map for directions.

Swamp Kings Swamp Appeal CD Release Party

Swamp Appeal CD

Schooner Tavern Friday, March 6th

The Swamp Kings along with Toby Lee Marshall on the B3 organ will be celebrating the release of their new CD, Swamp Appeal, this Friday at Schooner Tavern in Minneapolis. The Swamp Kings were formed in 2006 by veteran guitarist, Tom Harkness along with bassist, Matt Page. Percussionist, Connor McRae joined the band in 2007. Swamp Appeal features all original tunes along with one Tab Benoit song. The Swamp Kings excel in the sounds of swamp blues and Cajun boogie. "Swamp Blues originated in the Baton Rouge Louisiana area by musicians like Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo producing a more rock'n style of Cajun music. Cajun Boogie is a blend of traditional Cajun, Creole and Zydeco rhythms mixed with Honky Tonk, Swing, Boogie Woogie and Blues melodies" — from theswampkings.com. Music begins at 9 pm. NO COVER. Schooner Tavern is on the Blues Venue Map.
