Moses Oakland • A Lotta Jam

Moses Oakland
Moses Oakland (sans beard)
Peavey Plaza 2008

Thursdays at School II, Sundays at Famous Dave's

For twelve years Moses Oakland hosted the Monday blues jam at the old Blues Saloon in St Paul. It will be nine years in May since he began hosting the 8 pm. Sunday jam at Famous Dave's in Uptown. Since early last winter he has been hosting a jam on Thursday nights at the School II Wine Bar & Bistro in Chanhassen from 8 pm. to 11 pm. That's enough jam to make the folks at Smuckers envious. When he is not performing, Moses (a.k.a. Leonard Shapiro) runs a guitar repair business. If you have never seen Moses perform, you should, and these regular jams are a great opportunity. Both School II and Famous Dave's are listed on our Blues Venue Map. — Jake Jacobson

Lulu's On Main — New Venue in Anoka

Jay Walter at Neumann's
Jay Walter

Jay Walter & the Rectifiers Play April 11th

The former Durkin's Pub (and B-Side Lounge) has recently re-opened as Lulu's On Main in downtown Anoka. Lulu's is named after owner Tim Lang's grandmother and features traditional bar-style fare: sandwiches, salads, burgers and wraps.

This Saturday, April 11, Jay Walter & the Rectifiers will fill Lulu's with blues. The Rectifiers draw their material from the Chicago blues masters but also look to the early melding of gospel, rock-a-billy, blues and country that can be found in the early Sun and Excello recordings. The personnel behind Jay's harp varies but the lineup is always guaranteed to be top-shelf with the likes of guitarists Dan Schwalbe, John Franken, Phil Schmid, Jeremy Johnson or Jon Gunvaldson; bass players Jack Taylor, Dave Sanny or John Schroder and drummers Marty Bryduck, Dave Larson, Greg Shuck or Dwight Dario. On occasion Bruce McCabe has been known to sit in on keyboard and I even saw them at Neumann's with Bronco on sax. Jay tells me that he will be playing with John Franken, Jack Taylor and Greg Shuck on this gig. Music begins at 8:30 pm. Lulu's is on our Blues Venue Map. — Jake Jacobson
