Blues Saloon Re-Opening
Legendary Frogtown Venue Opens New Year's Eve
Yep, the rumours are true. Ted Wilebski is re-opening the Blues Saloon New Year's weekend in its old location on the corner of Western and Thomas in St Paul's Frogtown Neighborhood. Willie Murphy and the Angel Headed Hipsters will take the stage on New Year's Eve. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and may be obtained online from Willie's web site: www.williemurphy.net or at the Moonlight Magic Bar (below the Blues Saloon at street level). Continuing the re-opening celebration, on Friday, January 1, Mojo Buford will be performing with Rockin' Daddy & the Rough Cuts along with Cool Disposition. Saturday night, January 2, Curt Obeda and the Butanes return to the Blues Saloon. Doors open at 8:00 pm. Music starts at 9:00 pm. For more info call: 651-331-0929. Don King has a busy schedule this holiday week. On Wednesday he will be at the Minneapolis Eagles Club at 7:45 pm. On Saturday, December 26th, the band will be appearing at the SOS (Spirit of Sobriety) Club in Oakdale from 8:30 pm to 12:00 am. This is a family-friendly club with games, food and non-alcoholic beverages. This is one venue where you can enjoy the blues with your entire family. Neumann's Bar & Grill has been around for 121 years. I think maybe that bullfrog in the window has been there since the beginning. Neumann's has been a loyal supporter of local/regional blues acts on-and-off for years now, recently mostly "on". So far in December they've featured Ross William Perry, "Hurricane" Harold Tremblay, Cool Disposition, Nite Rail and Boom Boom Steve V & the Knockouts. This Friday, Lisa Wenger Band will grace the beer case stage under the Hamm's bear and the moose. Saturday, Armadillo Jump hops in. For the most part, it's a pretty safe bet that there'll be some good music every weekend at Neumann's. — Jake Jacobson

Nite Rail Comes North
Mankato-Based Band Hits Twin Cities Venues
Nite Rail is steaming into the Twin Cities for some gigs in the upcoming days. Led by Mike Fugazzi on vocals and harp with Korey Hicks on guitar and vocals, Zach Sershon on keyboard, Konr Ness on bass, vocals and keyboard and James Schneeburg on drums; Nite Rail delivers a high-energy rock and blues show from start to finish. Their web site warns, "This is not background music." Their song repertoire draws from rock, blues, funk and soul. On Friday, December 11, the band will be at Neumann's Bar in North St Paul. Saturday, December 12, they will be at McMahon's Irish Pub in Minneapolis. Next week, on Friday, December 18, they will be at Shaw's Bar & Grill in Nordeast Minneapolis. Keyboard man, Tom Hunter will be appearing along with Santa Claus at the Withrow Ballroom on Saturday morning, December 12, from 9 to 11 am. Admission is $3 along with a food shelf donation. The event features cookie decorating and crafts along with the music. I am not sure, but I think Santa plays a vintage Gibson ES-335 (joking). On Saturday night Tom will have a more conventional gig with Jon "Gunner" Gunvaldson, who plays a vintage Harmony guitar, at Washington Square Bar & Grill from 9 pm to 12 am. — Jake Jacobson

If you were lucky enough to attend the GTCBMS Members' Appreciation Picnic this past summer, you know what a talented and versatile guitar-player/vocalist Steve Blexrud is. This Saturday, December 12, Steve will be playing along with Craig Paquette (vocals, rhythm and slide guitar)and Brad McDonald (bass guitar) as the Thunderheads Trio at the Driftwood Char Bar in Minneapolis. The band derives their inspiration from "an eclectic mix of rock, prog rock, folk-rock, blues and jazz-rock, with extended jams sometimes thrown in." Driftwood Char Bar is on our Map. — Jake Jacobson
