They Still Play the Blues at the Junction

Jimi "Prime Time" Smith Thursday, Dec. 18th

The Junction (aka. Whiskey Junction) has a long history as a local blues venue including the "Live at the Whiskey" recording sessions from the mid-1980's that featured Jonny Lang, Doug Maynard, Lynwood Slim and Big Walter Smith among others.

This Thursday The Junction will showcase one of the area's finest blues singer/guitarists, Jimi "Prime Time" Smith. Jimi learned to play the guitar from Chicago legend, Jimmy Reed, and actually toured with Reed's band as a teenager in the mid-1970's including a stop at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival.

Live Music at School II Wine Bar and Bistro

Regular Gigs by Paul Mayasich & Moses Oakland

School II in Chanhassen is now having live music four nights a week Wednesday through Thursday. Wednesday 7:30-10:30 pm is Paul Mayasich and friends. Thursday is an open jam with Moses Oakland and his band from 8-11 pm. Friday and Saturday are bands from 8-11 pm. Often, Saturday night will be the band of Paul's Wednesday guest. There is no cover Wednesday and Thursday. There generally is on weekends.

School II is a newly opened establishment by other owners of "School of the Wise" in Victoria. They have a very nice wine list, numerous beers, and a nice selection of harder spirits. Their menu is very nice, but limited. The gourmet cheese platters are very nice, as are the panninis and pizzas. The music is held in the back dining area, but is generally kept to a tasteful level and can be heard quite well up front in the wine bar area. It is a good sounding room. Paul's guest on Wednesday is usually the same person he has on Tuesday in White Bear Lake, so if you are a southern metro person and Hollihan's is too far to drive, stop on in Wednesdays at School II in Chanhassen.—Photo & Text by Ted Jolivette

Detroit Don King At Dusty's

Smooth Blues in Nordeast Minneapolis, Friday, Dec. 12th

Detroit Don King rolls into Dusty's Bar and Grill in Nordeast Minneapolis on Friday night Dec. 12th. If you've never heard Don before this is a great opportunity. An accomplished singer and guitarist, Don knows his way around the blues and his comfortable style is a perfect fit for a small club like Dusty's.

One review I read touts Dusty's as having great greasy burgers, sausages and especially good homemade Polish soup made from potato, cabbage, sausage and ham served steaming hot. Sounds like a good spot to settle in to some food, beverages and blues.

Cool Disposition Heats Up Neumann's

Saturday, Dec. 13th in North St Paul

2007 International Blues Challenge competitors, Cool Disposition will be performing in familiar surroundings at Neumann's Bar in North St Paul this Saturday night. The band has been putting the finishing touches on a new CD that should be released soon. I'm guessing that they will probably try some of those new tunes out on the crowd at Neumann's. Always a treat, put on your dancing shoes and get ready for some 'cool' jump blues. Neumann's is listed on our Blues Venue Map.
