Cadillac Kolstad & the Flats

Des Moines Hosts Winter Blues Fest

Cadillac Kolstad & the Flats and Cornbread Harris, who represented GTCBMS at the IBC in Memphis, shared the stage for two rousing sets at the Iowa Winter Blues Fest sponsored by the Central Iowa Blues Society on February 9 at the Fort Des Moines Hotel in Des Moines.

Touted as the "Festival of Challenge Winners", other acts included Trampled Under Foot, Kansas City Blues Society and overall IBC winning band; Matt Woods & the Thunderbolts, Iowa Blues Societies winning band; Willie Mac & Alan Smith, Iowa Blues Society winning duo; RJ Mischo & His Red Hot Blues Band; Ernie Peniston Band; Kevin "BF" Burt & the Instigators; Sumpin' Doo; and Hot Tamale & the Red Hots.

As if the wonderful music provided by these bands was not enough, attendees were treated to an after hours jam following the performances.

This was the third year for the Iowa Winter Blues Fest, which traditionally features the winners of the competitions held in the Twin Cities and Kansas City as well as their own winning acts.

Cadillac Kolstad & the Flats and Cornbread Harris also performed live during a interview on KFMG radio 99.1 prior to the festival, wowing the interviewer as well as fans by transporting their own piano into the studio.

Paul Mayasich & Friends

Tuesdays at Hollihan's in White Bear Lake

For about the last two years Paul Mayasich has been playing every Tuesday at Hollihan's Pub in White Bear Lake. Start time is 7:30 and he plays until 11:30. He invites other musicians to come play with him, so it's a little different every time. You may get some country or folk mixed in with blues depending on who the guests are. Paul always keeps it upbeat and danceable though. Usually by the last set there are quite a few dancers up and moving. Add that to the killer guitar playing and it makes a great Tuesday night.

Hollihan's Pub is a neighborhood style bar that tries to be a blues dive. It's really too nice though. The scotch and bourbon selection also gives it away. The drink prices are pretty good. This is a bar though, so don't expect much for food. Pizzas are it. If you stop in to hear some music, tell Rich the owner you appreciate him having it.

Hollihan's Pub is located at 2160 3rd St. White Bear Lake, MN. Where Washington Ave. runs into 3rd St.(See also the Blues Venue Map in Resources.)
