Nigel Egg, John Ashton and Lonnie Knight were the guest musicians on stage at e.p. atelier's Songwriters Thursday on the 16th of August. When I walked into atelier's it was as though time slowed way down. The chatter was casual, the stories were fun to listen to, the writing challenges were interesting to hear about, and the music was genuine. Names of songwriting instructional books were mentioned. Examples of the originals played on stage were "In Your Neighborhood" by John Ashton, "Lucky Man Blues" by Nigel Egg and "One Apple", a biblical (so he says!) blues song by Lonnie Knight. A jammer named Tony played, during a break, a melodic instrumental on his autoharp.

The Songwriters Thursday occurs once a month on the third Thursday from 8-10 PM. Spoken word precedes this from 7-8 PM. The songwriting circle is organized by Lonnie Knight. Generally, Lonnie invites, in advance, three songwriters to participate. The intent of this monthly gathering is to have a place for those who love songwriting to come and hear about the craft through casual conversation. The songwriters on stage swap stories and present acoustic solo music in a wide-open format. Sometimes, but not always, the songwriters circle focuses on a theme (such as political diatribe, humor and parody) or a genre (contemporary, American roots, etc).

If you are interested in participating in one of these songwriting circles, you can contact Lonnie at lk@lonnieknight.com. Lonnie also hosts an acoustic open stage every Tuesday 7-10 pm. Sign up starts at 6pm and Lonnie usually has room for 12-14 performers doing 3 songs each. The atmosphere is supportive and encouraging, welcoming everyone from novice to professional.

e.p. atelier is located at 609 S. 10th St in Minneapolis. The phone number is 612-332-4000. For more info visit: www.epatelier.com/calendar.html
