There was just a hint of autumn in the air on September 25, 2005. It was a good day for nostalgia and spending an afternoon of exploring the blues with Leo Whitebird and friends at the Coffee Grounds in Falcon Heights. And, it was an opportunity to sing happy birthday to our Vice President, Tom Asp.
The number of guitars in and around the stage area was many and Leo Whitebird invited many of his musician friends up on stage to play music with him. The music demonstrated a wide range of blues and blues-influenced music. For example, Blue Cheez Band demonstrated folk/country blues; Feigning Interest was more an example of blues based rock and roll; and the New Grassheads played folk blues. We listened to classic southern blues with Don Fitzwater playing resonator guitar and Leo on slide guitar. It was the Handbarrow Crew who did the experimental blues set before the Musty Velvets performed jazz and blues standards. The Intangibles play folk and rock blues and the Early Mammals fast-speed ahead to hard rock and heavy metal music with its base in the blues.
Many of the musicians Leo has played with in the past were present and played with Leo for the event. The following lists the various groups:
- Blue Cheez - Leo , David James Carlson and Stider Hammer - all on guitar & vocals
- Feigning Interest - Leo, John Ewaldt & Todd McKenny (guitars) & Tom Patsy (bass)
- Paddy - Leo (mandolin), Ed McGrath (guitar) & Tim McGrath (guitar)
- New Grassheads - Leo and Steve Kaul both playing guitar & vocals
- Handbarrow Crew - Leo, Wendy Darst, Dan Ferguson & Rick Smriscek
- Musty Velvets - Leo, John Mason on guitars & Greg Beech on bass
- Early Mammals - Leo, Dave Joyslin (guitars), Matthew DeRoche (bass) & Matt Bachelor (drums)
- Intangibles - Leo, Bob Nordquist (guitars), Dale Engquist (bass) & Brian Russ (drums)
It was a good day to spend an afternoon in the company of friends while listening to music and enjoying ice cream, birthday cake, sandwiches, pastries, sodas, teas and coffees.
The day was also a celebration of Leo's trademark generosity with his time and music resources. True to form, Leo pledged all his cd sale sales from this event for Katrina musicians. The Society also collected donations to defray event costs.
