For the second time this year, the act selected at the 2011 Road To Memphis Challenge last spring has had to withdraw from the 2012 International Blues Challenge in favor of the first runner-up act. Tom Hunter is experiencing carpal tunnel-like symptoms in his hands and wrists and feels that he will not be able to perform to his utmost capacity at the IBC competition. The announcement was made yesterday at the Road To Memphis Fund-Raising event at the Covered Bridge Restaurant & Lounge in Zumbrota, MN. We are pleased to announce that the soulful and talented singer, Annie Mack, along with her guitar accompanist, Tom Kochie, will represent Minnesota as our duo act at the 2012 IBC in Memphis, TN, January 31 through February 4, 2012. Special thanks to Trent Romens, Mark Cameron Band, Sena Ehrhardt Band, Annie Mack & Tom Kochie, Tom Hunter & Jon Gunvaldson, Javier & the Innocent Sons, Jon Stee at the Covered Bridge and all of the volunteers and audience members who made this event successful. — Road To Memphis Committee

Sena Ehrhardt Band Withdraws At Behest of Blind Pig Records

The 2011 Road To Memphis Challenge winner, Sena Ehrhardt, has requested that GTCBMS withdraw her band from the 2012 International Blues Challenge competition. In view of her recent signing with Blind Pig Records, Sena explains, "After much discussion with the President of Blind Pig Records- Jerry Del Giudice, as well as with his colleague from the San Francisco Blind Pig office Edward Chmelewski, they feel that my band should not compete in this year's International Blues Challenge. He and I both read through the IBC rules carefully and noticed that the rule prohibiting signed acts from competing at IBC is no longer in place- however they both feel that the IBC really is geared more toward unsigned acts who are looking for the opportunity to have representation by a record label- which we now have." In accordance with the GTCBMS Road To Memphis Challenge Policy, we have offered the opportunity to compete in January 2012 at the IBC to first runners-up, Javier & the Innocent Sons. We are pleased to announce that they have accepted. — Jake Jacobson

Chosen 2011 Road To Memphis Challenge Acts

Unseasonably cool weather did not prevent an enthusiastic crowd from witnessing a "heated" competition at the 2011 Road To Memphis Challenge, Sunday, May 1 at Wilebski's Blues Saloon in St. Paul. Six bands and three duo acts vied for the opportunity to represent Minnesota at the 2012 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN this coming February.

This year's participating acts were all of exceptional quality and it almost certainly made for some difficult decisions by the judges. In the end, Sena Ehrhardt Band was selected as the representative "Band" with Tom Hunter & Jon Gunvaldson chosen as the "Duo" act.

Special thanks to all of the volunteers, the judges, the bands and Ted Wilebski for helping to make this event a success. — Jake Jacobson
