At Roy Wilkins Auditorium

The first Winter Carnival Blues Festival at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium on January 23, 2009 hosted over 700 blues fans in a surprisingly cozy open seating environment featuring a mix of small table arrangements with lamp post illumination as well as some bleacher seating in the back. The BBQ pulled pork sandwiches were particularly good and an ample supply of beverages were available.

But it was the music that made this a hit. The Klondike Kates delivered a very 'bluesy' set in keeping with the theme of the festival. BC III did a jazz-flavored instrumental set followed by the Big George Jackson Band who delivered the real-deal electric blues that they are known for. Legendary folk-blues performer, "Spider" John Koerner, put on a great show playing a mix of songs, some of which he has been performing for forty years. Eddie Shaw & the Wolf Gang brought the sounds of Chicago with them and featured Eddie's son on a triple-necked guitar. A young local three-piece band, Nikki & the Ruemates, kept their acoustic set on the blues track, too. Finally, Maurice John Vaughn entertained the crowd on guitar and piano; and called local celeb and Festival MC, Jacquie Maddix, onto the stage to sing a few songs with the band. Congratulations to Steve Heckler and the folks who put the Winter Carnival Blues Festival together. See you next year.
