Papa John's Acoustic Blues Series
@ Merlin's Rest
Feb. 28, 7-10 pm, Special Showcase Opens Series
Featuring Papa John Kolstad & Clint Hoover, Doug Otto & Albert Perez, And Lonesome Dan Kase
Papa John Kolstad & Clint Hoover
The Twin Cities have had a national reputation for great blues for over 40 years. In the 60's this was a creative center for the acoustic, down home, prewar blues. The great talent and brilliant playing of Koerner, Ray and Glover was recognized internationally. Lazy Bill Lucas, Willie Murphy and many others shared their blues with the audiences of this town. There were many coffee houses, clubs and concert venues for musicians to play. Through the years things changed and most blues you could hear was the electric Chicago style blues. Though great music, featuring many very talented players it was very different from the more subtle, quieter, harmonically more complex, acoustic country or down home blues.
It has been an idea that I have been kicking around for some time. I want to see a showcase at least once per month featuring this wonderful, rich American music. Merlin's rest has graciously offered the last Monday of each month to present this music. — Papa John Kolstad
The series begins this Monday, February 28, 7 to 10pm, with a Special Showcase performance featuring Papa John Kolstad & Clint Hoover, Lonesome Dan Kase and Doug Otto & Albert Perez. The series continues March 28 with Doug Otto & Albert Perez, April 25 with Papa John Kolstad & Clint Hoover and May 30 with Lonesome Dan Kase. Merlin's Rest is located at 3601 East Lake St in Minneapolis (see the Blues Venue Map). There is no cover charge but feeding the musicians' tip jar is always welcomed.

Scottie Miller DVD Release
March 4 @ Loring Theater
Performing @ Jazz88 Roots Music House Party, Feb. 27
Scottie "Bones" Miller is the only Minnesota performer to have made it to finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis (2005). He toured with the late Bo Diddley and will be touring Australia for three weeks in April including one date with Ruthie Foster. He has also been inducted into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame (2008). This Sunday, February 27, Scottie will be participating in KBEM Jazz88FM's Roots Music House Party at the Aster Cafe located at St. Anthony Main, 125 SE Main St, Minneapolis, MN. Scottie takes the stage at 8 pm. Also performing are DL Cajun Trio at 4 pm, Molly Maher at 5:15 pm and Chris Silver Band at 6:45 pm.
On Friday, March 4, Scottie will be performing (with strings!) at the Release Party for his new DVD, Home, at the Loring Theater (see our Map for location). Performance time is 7 pm. Tickets are $12. The event will also help raise funds and awareness on domestic violence for "Tubman". I've seen the DVD. If you have ever wished you could have Scottie Miller come to your home and perform a private concert, this DVD is just the ticket for you. Filmed live in front of a small gathering of friends at Kevin Odegard's home in April 2010, Home features a solo piano/vocal performance of ten of Scottie's original compositions plus an interview of Scottie by Kevin Odegard. — Jake Jacobson
