[Road To Memphis "Youth Showcase" 2018 Online Application] [Printable Application Form]
The Minnesota Blues Society is sponsoring a solo/duo/band to participate in the "Youth Showcase" at the International Blues Challenge (IBC), Memphis in January 2019.
Our local Road To Memphis "Youth Showcase" competition will be held in two stages:
- First, participants will be required to submit a CD, DVD, or YouTube consisting of three songs of your choosing. (Remember, this is a Blues competition.)
- Secondly, from these entries, the judges will pick up to 10 finalists that will be given the opportunity to compete in the "Live" Finals competition on August 19, 2018. Announcement of those finalists will be made on or before August 13, 2018.
We will hold our Road to Memphis "Youth Showcase" Finals on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at a Twin Cities "all ages" venue T.B.A. and judges will select a single solo, duo or band our society will sponsor. If you think you would like to sign-up for the Road to Memphis "Youth Showcase", please fill out the application form. The following lists qualifications to compete in the Road to Memphis "Youth Showcase":
- Individuals are not permitted to compete if their names have ever been included on a Blues Music Award (formerly Handy Awards) ballot. This does not apply to sidemen of these individuals.
- Membership in the Minnesota Blues Society is not required at this time, but eligibility to compete in the Finals of our Society's Road to Memphis Challenge "Youth Showcase" requires at least one musician from each act be a member of the Minnesota Blues Society at the time of the Finals. We have membership forms on this website under "Join MnBS".
- You must be a musician(s) from the State of Minnesota to compete and under 21 years of age at the time of competition in Memphis, January 2019.
- We ask that applicants be capable, both physically and financially, of travel to Memphis for the purpose of participating in the 2019 IBC. If you travel to the IBC, we ask that you are dedicated to representing our Society at IBC sponsored functions. The person(s) chosen to represent our Society will be required to travel with at least one adult or legal guardian of the act participating.
- No entry fee is required for the first stage of this competition, but each participant for the Finals must pay a application fee. The fee is $5.00 for each musician in your act. All application fees will be dedicated to the "Get Out of Town Fund" for travel-related costs for those selected to perform in the IBC. The fee is tax-deductible.
- We require all finalist musical acts to arrive at the beginning of the Road to Memphis "Youth Showcase" event on Sunday, August 19, 2018. Start time is the same for everyone and we will draw straws for order of performance. We ask that the musicians support one another.
- Applications must be mailed and postmarked (or submitted online) no later than Monday, August 6, 2018, midnight.
- Final competitors will be asked to provide a brief bio along with a photo prior to the Road To Memphis "Youth Showcase" Finals competition. We will send details once we have chosen the finalists.
Our Society does not have funds available to assist the act with IBC-associated costs but we will cooperate with them to help raise funds by sponsoring "Get Out of Town" fundraisers. It is the musician's responsibility to set up the fundraiser's gigs and let the society know the dates and venues for "Get Out Of Town" fundraisers.
Our Mission Statement: The Minnesota Blues Society seeks opportunities to research and document the history of local blues music; to chart the evolution of the blues community located in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota; to teach, interpret, archive, catalog and otherwise preserve the history of blues music in this metro region; to provide learning opportunities related to this American-roots music genre; and to enhance and celebrate the existing blues music environment in the Greater Twin Cities Metropolitan Area of the State of Minnesota.
Please pass along this information to other musicians who may not be on our email list and let them know they can be on our musicians email list for the asking.
