"The Big" Fund Raiser,
January 23, 2011 @ Whiskey Junction

This year the 'big' fund raiser for the Road To Memphis competitors will be held at Whiskey Junction on Sunday, January 23, 4 to 8 pm. Former International Blues Challenge competitors Davina & the Vagabonds, Good Time Willy Band, most of Cool Disposition, members of Rockin' Daddy & the Rough Cuts, John Franken and Steve Vonderharr have agreed to participate, so far. When you add current IBC competitors, Jeff Ray & Hurricane Harold and Curtis Marlatt & the Kicks, it promises to be quite a show. The $10 cover will go directly to the fund to send Jeff, Harold, Curtis and the Kicks to Memphis for the 2011 International Blues Challenge. Curtis Blake has also been added to the lineup.

The competition was tough. The other bands in the competition were: The Bourbones, The Mark Cameron Band, Sena Ehrhardt Band, NiteRail, Root City Band and The Swamp Kings. Cadillac vs. Cornbread was a "no-show". Cornbread Harris did compete in the solo/duo competition, as did Tom Hunter & Jon Gunvaldson. Thank you to the judges: Davina Sowers (Davina & the Vagabonds), Ted Wilebski (Wilebski's Blues Saloon), Tim O'Brien (American Guitar & Band), Judy Cedar (GTCBMS), Gregg Harcus (GTCBMS) and Dick Schaefer (GTCBMS). Also, thanks to Mary Kay Harcus for time-keeping, Doug Spike for being the score-keeper and Ken Zeiska for being the MC. This was a well-attended, entertaining and successful event for GTCBMS. Thank you to Chairman, Jim Pinckney, and the Road To Memphis Committee, Little and Tom at Whiskey Junction, American Guitar & Band for backline equipment, Mike the sound guy, all of the volunteers who helped on the day of the event and especially to all of the blues music fans who turned out to support this event. We will keep you posted about fund raising events to help send Curtis Marlatt & the Kicks and Jeff Ray & Hurricane Harold to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this coming February, 2011. — Jake Jacobson

What is a GOOT?

GOOT is an acronym for "Get Out Of Town". The Greater Twin Cities Blues Music Society sets aside a GOOT fund to help the acts representing Minnesota at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN to offset travel-related expenses for the competition. Acts competing at the IBC do not receive compensation for their performances in the competition and must pay for their own transportation, food and lodging in Memphis. Tax-deductible contributions may be made through GTCBMS for this purpose. It is the responsibility of the participating acts to organize their own GOOT events.
