September 14th was a rainy Sunday afternoon but that did not dampen the enthusiasm at this year's Road To Memphis Challenge. The ample crowd at Minnesota Music Cafe was treated to some great music as the bands vied for a spot in this year's International Blues Challenge to be held in Memphis in February 2009. After some tough deliberations, the judges selected The Brothers Curtis as the duo act and Davina & the Vagabonds as the band to represent the Greater Twin Cities Blues Music Society at the competition on Beale St this year.

The Dee Miller Band and Terraplane were the other entrants in the band category. Dee put on a great show despite just getting out of bed for the first time following a bout with the flu. Foster Willey's band, Terraplane performed a spirited, electrified-set of what he described as representing "the under-belly of Twin Cities blues". In the end, it was the Vagabonds; a five-piece band consisting of bass, drums, keyboard, trumpet and trombone, no guitar or harmonica, that got the nod from the judges. Nigel Egg was the other participant in the solo/duo category. Nigel was sporting his pink-and-orange signature colors and played all original tunes including "(You Can't Sing the Blues with an)English Accent".

The participants in the IBC receive no compensation for their performances or traveling expenses. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the "Get Out of Town" fund to assist the musicians, we urge you to make a donation online or at one of the upcoming GOOT fund raising events. We'll keep you posted. And, yes, the slideshow is finally posted.
