Made It To Memphis!

Brandon Scott Sellner Band @ 152 Club on Beale St

Just a quick note from Memphis. Everyone arrived safe and sound. The boys performed at the 152 Club last night in front of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters. As always seems to be the case in these competitions, the soundman has to tweak the levels for each act. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't. All-in-all, the band performed well and finished within the time limit. Tonight they face a new set of judges. Lots of folks from Minnesota are down here including Davina & The Vagabonds. Davina will perform in a showcase at Rum Boogie Cafe today. — from Memphis, Jake Jacobson

Boom Boom's CD Selected As Best Self-Produced Entry

The judges completed their decision over the weekend choosing among the three CD's submitted for consideration for entry into the Blues Foundation's "Best Self-Produced CD" competition for 2010. Thank you, judges, for your time and effort. It was difficult to not appreciate Cool Disposition's Jumping in the Mudd with Mickey Bauer's smooth vocals and the horn section, or the raw energy and spontaneity of Cadillac Kolstad and Cornbread Harris' Cadillac vs. Cornbread, All the Fun (at Palmer's Bar). But in the end the nod went to Boom Boom Steve V & the Knockouts for the honest emotions delivered musically on their Tuff Love CD. Congratulations, Steve, and good luck in Memphis! The quality of this year's entries once again confirms how lucky we are to have such great local blues talent. Be sure to support all the local bands at their live performances and purchase their CDs to help keep the blues alive and well in Minnesota. — Jake Jacobson
