Jo Jo Williams Dies at 86

2006 Inductee Into MN Rock & Country Hall of Fame

I got a call from Mojo Buford telling me that Jo Jo died yesterday morning. I hope he makes the local Obits. He used to come out and play with The Mojo Buford Band all through the 1970's. Always dressed "sharp as a tack". We used to jam with him after reheasal at Lazy Bill's house. We even made a come back 8-Track that Bill recorded on his little system. What I wouldn't give to hear that now. He would always sing "All the Pretty Women" and "Tin Pan Alley" at Christmas time he'd croon "Merry Christmas, Baby". At his tribute at Arnelias he told me "Cool Breeze, You look like a goddamn bank president or sumthin" complimenting me on my diamond ring and flashy stage suit. Then he requested me to sing "T.V. Mama" a shuffle by Big Joe Turner which features Elmore James on guitar. I happily obliged him watching him flash that big warm smile of his. He was an ardent supporter of young blues guys like me in the 1970's. He would always invite you over to sit down and have a drink with him. Whether we were playing The S.U.B.A club on Selby and Dale, or Roadbuddies on University (The Ebony Lounge upstairs-no liquor license but the owner Harold said it was okay with the cops as long as it kept the black folks from drinking uptown) or the River Serpent or the Cabooze he would alway come out and sit in. A truly friendly, great, down home guy with a very interesting blues history. I will miss him. — Dave "Cool Breeze" Brown

Note: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26th at the Estes Funeral Chapel, 2210 Plymouth Ave N, Minneapolis, 612-521-6744. Visitation at 1 pm and Services at 3 pm.
